End represents part of a private 15 inch gauge railway built to serve
the farms of a large country estate. The period is around 1950 when such
a line might just have still existed. A handful of such railways were
built in the late Victorian or Edwardian eras using a gauge of 15 or 18
inches, though for lines developed in the 1920s a gauge of 24 inches was
more common as war surplus material could be used.
As you face the layout the big house, stables and dairy are all off to the left, while the farms, sawmill and village are to the right. The modelled scene includes a mill, a storage warehouse for farm produce, the estate office and a small service area for the locomotives. The locos have been
adapted from 00 models, while most of the rolling stock has been built
from Sidelines kits; other vehicles have been scratch-built in styrene
on old Hornby bogies adapted as wagon underframes. Accessories and people
come from various ranges produced for G scale or large scale farm sets. |
